Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus will be the company’s upcoming flagship devices. Both these devices are the successors to Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus which came with a lot of innovative features. The dual camera setup introduced with the Galaxy Note 8 will also be featured on the Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus devices. We expect the next-gen Galaxy S devices to launch in February or March of 2018.

Samsung Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9 Plus Firmware & Model Numbers Leaked

(September 29th, 2017)

After unveiling the Galaxy Note 8 ahead of the IFA 2017 event, Samsung has recently launched it in the Indian market. For the first time, the company has added a dual camera setup with the Galaxy Note 8. Before the iPhone launch event, DJ Koh, CEO of Samsung has confirmed the launch of foldable Galaxy smartphone in 2018. He also mentioned facing technological hurdles in commercializing the device.

However, the company’s next flagship smartphones – the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are already in the development stage. Just like the Galaxy S8 launch, both the Galaxy S9 devices are expected to be launched ahead of the MWC 2018 event. Today, we got to know about the model numbers of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus as SM-G960F and SM-G965F respectively. These are on the same lines as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones.

While the Galaxy S8 came with SM-G950 and Galaxy S8 Plus has SM-G955 as the model number. Even the firmware development for the upcoming Galaxy S devices has already begun. Looking at the model numbers, the G960FXXU0AQI5 firmware is for Galaxy S9, and G965FXXU0AQI5 is for Galaxy S9 Plus. By the time of the official launch, the devices should be running on Android 8.0.1 Oreo or later with the Samsung Experience UI on the top.

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will most probably feature dual camera setup on the rear. While the company missed out integrating under-glass fingerprint sensor with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 devices, the Galaxy S9 devices might become first Samsung devices to sport under-glass fingerprint technology. Since these devices are in the middle of the development stage, we should be seeing more leaks in the coming weeks.

Samsung Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus Rumored to Offer 6GB RAM & 128GB of Storage

(October 21st, 2017)

We came to know most of the iPhone X details ahead of its official launch, thanks to the leaks from Benjamin Geskin. Now, the same guy has revealed few details about the upcoming Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus smartphones. Just like the Galaxy Note9, the base models of the Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus will also offer 6GB of RAM. The devices will be coming with 128GB of internal storage and offer MicroSD card support for further expanding the storage.

While the U.S and Chinese variants are mentioned to come powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, the rest of the world will be seeing the devices with 10nm Exynos 9 Octa processor. The Exynos 9 Octa on the Galaxy S9 devices might be the successor to the Exynos 9 Octa 8895 used in the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note8 smartphones. We also expect the company to further trim down the bezels on the infinity display.

In term of the cameras, the new leak mentioned the Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus to sport the improved dual camera setup from the Galaxy Note8. By the time of the launch, the devices should be running on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. We will also be seeing the newly announced Bixby 2.0 AI and the improved DeX support. Samsung might unveil the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus in February at MWC 2018, or in March in New York.

First Look at the Samsung Galaxy S9 via Leaked Case Renders

(November 22nd, 2017)

It’s too early to expect the design of the Galaxy S9 smartphones which will be debuting the smartphone market in February or March of next year. However, the leaked case renders from Ghostek shows the front and rear view of the Galaxy S9 smartphone. The hardware buttons on the Galaxy S9 are placed same as on the Galaxy S8 devices. The dedicated Bixby button is also present on this device too.

On the rear, we are looking at the dual camera setup along with LED flash, fingerprint sensor, and heart rate sensor. Unlike the Galaxy Note 8, the dual cameras on the Galaxy S9 are placed vertically. Samsung might not found a way to integrate the under display fingerprint sensor. However, Samsung has finally decided to place the fingerprint in a more convenient position. The display on the front of the device is curved on to the edges.

The top bezel on the front holds the earpiece, IRIS sensor, front camera, and other sensors. Apart from improving the IRIS scanner functionality, the Face Unlock feature might also get a substantial update to compete with Apple’s FceiD. Unlike the Galaxy S8 or Note 8 devices, the bottom bezel on this device looks to be smaller in length. As seen on the Apple iPhone X, we don’t expect Samsung will completely trim down the bottom bezel on this upcoming device.

Samsung Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus will Debut at CES in January

(November 24th, 2017)

Just yesterday, the leaked case renders gave the first look of the Galaxy S9 smartphone. The company is expected to launch both the Galaxy S9 devices sometime in March 2018. However, the latest report from VentureBeat suggests the company to showcase the Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus at the CES 2018 scheduled to be held in Las Vegas from January 9th to 12th. While the company might tease the new flagship smartphones at the CES, the actually will still be held in March next year.

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus codenamed as Star 1 and Star 2 comes with the model numbers SM-G960 and SM-G965 respectively. As seen with the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus devices, the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will also feature 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Super AMOLED Infinity displays respectively. With the Galaxy S9 Plus, the company will also offer 2 gigs of extra RAM and dual camera setup. Both the devices include 64GB of expandable storage along with the 3.5mm headphone jack.

We also expect the devices to run on the latest Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. As seen in the above image, the fingerprint will be now placed below the rear camera. Additionally, the devices will newly offer AKG stereo speakers. Under the hood, the U.S and South Korean variants will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and rest of the world will get the in-house Exynos 9810 backed devices.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Devices to Come with Improved IRIS Scanner

(December 12th, 2017)

The Galaxy S8 & Galaxy Note 8 smartphones launched in 2017 came with IRIS scanners along with fingerprint sensors. While the IRIS scanner is more secure than Face Recognition technology, it has its own backdrops. In most of the cases, the IRIS scanner does need to some attention to unlock the device. However, the latest leaks suggest the upcoming Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus will be coming with improved IRIS scanners.

The new sensor will be coming with 3MP resolution instead of the just 2MP as seen on the current-gen IRIS scanners. It is said to work even in dark conditions. With the enhanced security features, the IRIS scanning should also be accepted for authenticating bank accounts. The devices will still feature the fingerprint sensor on the rear.

Samsung Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9+ Spotted in CAD Renders

(December 15th, 2017)

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9 devices are rumored to come with the iPhone X-like edge-to-edge display. However, the newly leaked CAD renders of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ hints the company to retain similar design as their predecessor. After launching the Galaxy S9 and Note 8 devices with hard to reach fingerprint sensor placement, the company seems to have found the perfect spot for the fingerprint sensor on these upcoming devices. It will be placed beneath the camera sensor and the LED flash is now moved from left to the right side of the camera sensor.

Just like the Galaxy S8 devices, we can also find the thin bezels on the top and bottom of the Infinity display on the Galaxy S9 devices. The power button is placed on the right edge, and the volume rocker and Bixby button can be found on the left edge. The 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C port, and speaker are placed on the bottom edge. So, we can unofficially confirm that the company is retaining the 3.5mm audio jack with their 2018 flagship devices. On the top edge are the secondary microphone and hybrid SIM card slot.

Talking about the cameras, the Galaxy S9+ offers dual rear cameras and the Galaxy S9 is only limited to the single rear camera. Unlike the Galaxy Note 8, the dual cameras on the Galaxy S9+ are aligned vertically. Both the devices come with a dual curved glass on the front and rear. The dimensions of the Galaxy S9 are said to 147.6 x 68.7 x 8.4 mm, whereas the Galaxy S9+ measures 157.7 x 73.8 x 8.5 mm.

(January 11th, 2018)

At the CES 2018, Samsung unveiled the modular 146-inch MicroLED TV along with several IoT equipped products. However, there are no smartphone announcements on the CES show floor. Let’s wait and see, what new innovations the company might incorporate in the Galaxy S9 smartphones.

(January 25th, 2018)

A couple of days ago, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were spotted on Chinese 3C certification site with the model numbers SM-9600 and SM-9650 respectively. Today, the company has shared the teaser image through its social media handles confirming the Galaxy S9 devices to launch on February 25th. Samsung Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9+ Press Renders Leaked

(January 26th, 2018)

Just a couple days after the Samsung confirming to launch the Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9+ smartphones at the MWC 2018, the official renders and key details are leaked online. According to VentureBeat, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will come with 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Super AMOLED Infinity Displays respectively. As seen on the earlier launched flagship Galaxy smartphones, the upcoming smartphones will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor in the U.S and China, and the rest of the world gets the in-house Exynos 9810 processor.

On the design front, the device looks similar to their predecessor with curved edges and rounded corners. As expected earlier, the Galaxy S9 includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, and Galaxy S9+ offers 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There will also be a MicroSD card slot for further expansion of storage. The 12MP rear camera on both the devices will feature variable aperture mode for choosing either f/2.4 or f/1.5 aperture. They will also support super slo-mo videos at 480fps in 720p resolution.

The 12MP rear camera on the larger Galaxy S9+ will be accompanied by a secondary 12MP sensor. Just like the recently launched 2018 Galaxy A8 and A8+ smartphones, the upcoming Galaxy S9 devices will also sport fingerprint sensor below the rear camera sensor. For selfies, Samsung will be offering an 8MP sensor on both the devices. Another new feature on the Galaxy S9 devices is the addition of stereo speakers. It’s still not clear, why Samsung hasn’t offered stereo speakers with their last year’s flagship devices.

For those who badly miss the 3.5mm audio jack, Samsung is still continuing to include them on their smartphones. The device should be water resistant and support wireless charging. Both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are mentioned to be available starting March 16th, at least in the U.S. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more details about the upcoming Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus smartphones.
