Update: Microsoft India has just launched the Lumia 640 smartphone in India, with the price tag of Rs. 11999. It is the latest mid-range Lumia smartphone that was announced at the Mobile World Congress 2015 event in Barcelona, and finally gets the official release in India, along side its larger variant, the Lumia 640 XL.

Along with the Lumia 640 smartphone, Microsoft India also officially launched the larger Lumia 640 XL in India. Both these smartphones have almost the same design, which is as always a standard format maintained by Nokia earlier, and now by Microsoft. The Lumia 640 XL is priced at Rs. 15799. The Lumia 640 would be available exclusively on Flipkart while 640 XL would be available everywhere.

Earlier: The two Lumia smartphones, Lumia 640 and the Lumia 640 XL, which were both announced at the Mobile World Congress 2015, are going to be launched in India on April 7th. More details to be added very soon.

Earlier:
Microsoft, at MWC 2015, has just announced the new Lumia 640 smartphone with a 5-inch display, and Windows Phone 8.1 OS, which is upgradeable to Windows 10 in future. Along with that, the company also has a larger variant, as leaked yesterday, the Lumia 640 XL smartphone.

The Lumia 640 has a 5-inch 720p Clear Back display that Nokia used in the past, and there is Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Microsoft is including the Glance view in this, and internally, we see a 1.2GHz Qualcomm 400 quad-core processor along with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage, which can well be expanded.

Unexpectedly, there is a good 8-megapixel camera on the back of Lumia 640, with an LED flash. A 1-megapixel camera with wide angle lens is seen on the front of the device. Lumia Camera app will be a part of the software, thus you would be seeing several manual controls available while capturing pictures.

This is a larger device, with a 5.7-inch display, and this is called as the successor to the Lumia 1320, though the size is smaller than the 6-inch screen in 1320. While the display resolution, processor and internal hardware is the same as in Lumia 640, the camera is upgraded to a 13-megapixel one on the back with Carl Zeiss optics, and a wide angle 5-megapixel camera is on the front of the Lumia 640 XL.

Pricing and Availability

The Lumia 640 and 640 XL are coming with Office 365 Personal (worth $69.99) for free for a year, and the pricing is as follows.

The Lumia 640 will be available in April with LTE and 3G variants, and the price is 159 euro and 139 euro respectively. There will be Dual SIM variants available as well for both.

The Lumia 640 XL will be coming earlier, i.e. this month and similarly, there will be 3G and LTE models priced at 189 euro and 219 euro respectively. Both the phones will be available in cyan, orange, black, and white.

While the Lumia 640 has glossy removable back covers, only the black one has a matte finish. On the other hand, the Lumia 640 XL has matte finish removable back covers, except for glossy white one.

Earlier:
There have been a few blunders already, as we see one more ahead of the actual announcements in the MWC 2015. This time, it is Microsoft. At the Microsoft News Center, a blank blog post with title “Microsoft Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL: keeping you prepared for anything” showed up before it was taken down, but that was enough for the models to be known – Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL.

The XL moniker was earlier used when Nokia had come up with their AOSP based Nokia X, X+ and XL smartphones. It is clear with the name, that the Lumia 640 XL is going to be a larger variant with no other differences.

According to the several leaks, the Lumia 640 could be a 5-inch device with a 720p resolution, and it will have a Snapdragon 400 processor with 1GB RAM. The camera combination seems to be an 8-megapixel rear and 1-megapixel front-facing shooter, and these phones will be coming with Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim, and the OS will be upgradeable to Windows 10 in the future.

The Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL will have 8GB internal storage, with a MicroSD card slot, and probably will have a Dual SIM variant based on the market. The Brazilian certification website also indicated that the device might come with 4G LTE connectivity.
