Idea Cellular overtakes Vodafone, becomes 2nd Top Data Operator in India

The times when Telecom operator wars have started, all thanks to the Reliance Jio services. The operators like Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea, had to lower their tariffs for data packs. Recently, all three of the above have already announced some heavy duty changes to their Prepaid tariff for 3G & 4G service. The new monthly packs offer up to 67% more data on Vodafone and Airtel Number, while Idea Cellular now offer 45% more data benefits to its month data packs.

With 4G technology emerging as the leader in providing the faster and reliable data connectivity, it has changed the equations among the telecom operators. The greatest example is the Reliance Jio, who has acquired the pan-India license to operate 4G LTE network has seen the highest number of growth regarding mobile data usage beating Airtel in the Q1 2016 numbers.

Now the reports are coming in that Idea Cellular has overtaken the Vodafone as number two top data operator in the country. In the latest report released, Idea is touting that company has arguably the largest wireless data usage per month in the second quarter of 2016, i,e April to June.

Airtel users downloaded 45 Million GB Data, Reliance Jio users at 13 Million GB in Q1 2016

Vodafone India, now wholly owned subsidiary of the British-based Vodafone was expecting the 3G to remain in trend for the next 2-3 years. But with companies like Airtel followed by Idea launching the 4G services in lots of circles has made their data usage rise, resulting in growth. Whereas Vodafone which was leading earlier as the number to data provider in the country now kicked down, it’s position by Idea.

The main reason for Idea Cellular’s rise could be that it had almost double LTE spectrum as Vodafone and was able to leverage services in circles where it has launched its 4G services. Whereas Vodafone didn’t make required investments in 4G spectrum auction and is now falling short on its goals. Though, do make note that Vodafone is yet to release its number for the Q2 2016.

Vodafone’s forecasting was so poor and that’s the reason why they have slipped….I guess Jio will take number 1 spot very soon
