Google Officially Confirms Android O as Android 8.0 Oreo

Google Android 8.0 Oreo

After teasing for the last few months with unorthodox names, Google went back to Cadbury’s Oreo for the cute and sweet name for the next major Android version. From today, the all-new Android O is Android 8.0 Oreo. Though we would have loved to see Android O named after an Indian sweet, the Android Oreo sounds much better than Oatmeal Cookie or Orangina. Google’s love for the desserts started with the Android 1.5 Cupcake. Along with the name for the new update, Google also confirmed the version number to be Android 8.0.

While we finally got the name for the next Android version, we still have to wait for few more weeks to get the public beta of the Android 8.0 Oreo. Before Cadbury’s Oreo, the company partnered with Nestle to introduce the Android 4.4 KitKat. With the Android 8.0 Oreo, Google has introduced several new features like instant apps, PIP (picture-in-picture) mode, new emojis, and faster boot times. The new Android version also offers more advanced security options like Google Play Protect and improved Find My Device.

All the Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6P users with preview version will receive the final version of the Android 8.0 Nougat. The company also released the AOSP code of the latest OS to the manufacturers and carriers. The Android O was first unveiled at the Google I/O held earlier this year. Looking at the market share of the last years Android 7.0 Nougat, the new Android 8.0 Oreo might able to cross 10% market share in the first year of its release.

While few major manufacturers release the new Android updates at least for the high-end devices, many low-cost brands never care about the software updates. Last month’s number revealed the Android 7.x Nougat is only running on 13.5% of Android devices, that too almost one year after its release. Stay tuned on PhoneRadar for more details!
