Airtel is long rumored to bring its own feature phone to counter the JioPhone from Reliance Jio. Instead of a new and affordable feature phone, the company today announced a new smartphone in partnership with Karbonn mobiles. While the JioPhone effectively costs Rs. 0 after three years of usage, the Airtel 4G Phone will be costing Rs. 1,399. After paying the upfront fee of Rs. 2,899, the user has to make Rs 6,000 worth recharges for the next three years to get the cashback of Rs. 1,500.

While the JioPhone has to be returned to get the Rs. 1,500 cashback, the Airtel 4G Phone users keep the device with them even after claiming the cashback amount. The Rs. 1,500 cashback amount will be credited back to their Airtel Payments Bank account. Talking about the device, it is the Karbonn A40 Indian smartphone which is already available in the market without this offer. It sports a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) display on the front and is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core processor.

It runs on Android 7.0 Nougat and supports 22 Indian regional languages. The device also comes pre-loaded with MyAirtel, Airtel TV, and Wynk apps. There is 1GB of RAM and just 8GB of onboard storage. The storage can be expanded additionally up to 32GB via a MicroSD card slot. Unlike the JioPhone, the Airtel 4G phone comes with dual SIM dual standby support and offers 4G VoLTE along with 2G and 3G connectivity.

What is Rs 169 Special Plan for Airtel 4G Phone?

Airtel also announced a special Rs 169 plan for the Karbonn A40 smartphone users. While Jio 4G user has to get a new SIM card with the JioPhone, the Airtel 4G phone users can continue using their old SIM card. The new Rs 169 plan offers unlimited local and STD voice calling along with 512MB of 4G data per day. However, the unlimited calling might not include calls made while in the roaming network. For the Karbonn A40 smartphone users, the validity of the special Rs 169 plan is 28 days. For other handset users, the validity is only limited to 14 days.
