So, the VAIO smartphone was indeed a reality, and not just rumors. As expected, named the VAIO Phone, the device has got launched in Japan. The phone comes with a 5-inch 720p display as expected, and again as expected we are seeing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2 GHz processor and it will run Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. There will be a 2GB RAM support as well.
Update: So, AndroidCentral mentions that this is a rebranded Panasonic Eluga U2, making it even more of a deal breaker, as we see nothing new here.
The internal storage of the device is 16GB, and there is a MicroSD card slot for storage expansion. It is 7.95mm thick, and has a 13-megapixel camera on the back. The battery on the device comes with a capacity of 2500 mAh, which is said to give about 800 minutes of talktime. The battery is non removable. The device has a single MicroSIM card support.
The pricing set along with b-mobile carrier, is 51,000 yen (about $420). The phone will be available from March 20th.
Earlier: VAIO smartphone launching on March 12th.
Vaio was a part of Sony’s enterprise, focused on laptops and never in the smartphone market. Now, after getting into the hands of Japanese Industrial Partners (JIP), the brand is now set to come up with its first smartphone. This gets more interesting, because Vaio was sold by Sony only for the reason that they wanted to shift the focus away from laptops and PCs, and put more focus on mobile phones and televisions.
The device is set to release on March 12th, and it is a fact that although VAIO is now not a part of Sony, the company still has about 5% of shares in the VAIO brand and that is where some speculations have occurred, about a possible partnership between Sony and VAIO – another pointer towards it is the way the device looks.
The device might be even showcased at MWC 2015 event, and although there is no proper details available, some information is leaked via benchmark tests. According to those, the new VAIO smartphone will run Android 5.0 Lollipop, and the other specs include Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor under a 5-inch 720 display.
It also seems through the leaks, that the phone will be made by Quantum Electronics. 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage completes the leaked specs, and with all this, the device seems a total competitor to the Galaxy A5 from Samsung.
The details through rumors and leaks aren’t scarce, but as long as the brand doesn’t give an official word, we are still just expecting and not already believing it. MWC 2015 isn’t far, and even March 12th isn’t. We’ll see whether this really is something worth waiting for.
