Reliance’s mobile service Jio was launched back on December 28th and till date, it hasn’t commercially made available. It was first available for Reliance employees and later they could refer people to using this service. Recently, the company also offered the invites for the interested users who can get a Jio SIM purchasing LYF smartphone. So the deal is, with every SIM, users get unlimited 4G data, voice calls and SMS free for the first three months.
And now after all these months, the company said that it is almost ready to start offering its 4G services in the country. According to them, the services should be available in all circles, except for four, where the company predicts it could take up to four to six more weeks to prepare the network. However, the announcement indicates that the commercial launch may be just right around the corner.
According to a company executive, ‘the overall readiness of the commercial launch is really high for the company’. In the first-quarter earning briefing of Reliance Industries, he said that the firm received the last of the required approvals from the telecom department on July 7 in the four circles of Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This is where he mentioned that it would roughly take about four to six weeks in these four circles, without giving any exact launch date.
Being the world biggest startup with an investment of around INR 1.5 Lakh Crore, the launch has been six years in making since Reliance Industries re-entered the telecom sector. Jio has invested around INR lakh crore of the Rs 1.5 lakh crore for setting up its network, on the spectrum and other expenses. It is reported that it will spend the rest to expand coverage to 90 percent of the population over two years from the date of the launch.
Even without the commercial launch Jio already gained 7,00,000 users, and as guessed earlier, the company might give fierce competition to all the other well-established service providers. Compared to data consumption on other networks, the usage on Jio is very high, to be precise it is 18.5GB usage per month per Jio user. The leaked internet plans suggest Jio offer 1GB of 4G data at just Rs. 100 while other service providers are charging almost Rs. 250. If this comes true, then we can expect high data usage by Jio users. Stay tuned for more information on this in near future.
