After teasing the Redmi 3 from quite a few days, Xiaomi has officially launched the device in China today. As we earlier reported, the device is priced at just 699 Yuan (approx $107 / Rs. 7,150) which is same as its predecessor Redmi 2. Even at such a low price, it is one of the good mid-range devices with premium looking build quality. If you can settle for a 720p display, then this device can be a good alternative for any other device priced under Rs. 15,000 price range, at least on paper since we need to use the device before commenting on its performance.
The device will be available in plain Gold color or with a plaid design on the back with three color options including Gold, Gray, and Silver. It sports a slightly larger 5-inch HD display compared to 4.7-inch on the earlier Redmi devices. Under the hood is the 64-bit Snapdragon 616 octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, while all the other devices powered by the same chipset are priced 2-3 times more than the Redmi 3.
There is 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 16GB of onboard storage that can be further expandable up to 128GB. It supports dual SIM with the hybrid SIM slot where you can use the MicroSD card instead of the second SIM. It is backed by a 4,100mAh battery which is almost double than the 2,400mAh battery on the Redmi 2. It also supports Qualcomm’s fast charging with the provided 5V/2A power adapter.
It has a 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and PDAF that can focus in just 0.1 seconds. On the front is the 5MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture that comes 12 kinds of real-time filters to capture good-looking selfies, it can also record videos in Full HD resolution. The Redmi 3 runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop based MIUI 7.1 that was recently released for earlier Xiaomi devices.
