Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

As showcased on the Sony’s booth, the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua is official, and it isn’t something one was expecting when it comes to the design. Sony has used the Xperia Z3’s omnibalance design and actually used plastic instead of glass, and still is able to retain the aesthetics, while bringing the price down.

Update: The Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, a mid-ranger device from the company is just officially launched in India. The waterproof and dustproof smartphone with IP65/67 certification will be available in three color options. The price is set at Rs. 24990. The smartphone goes on sale from today.

The Xperia M4 Aqua is a 5 inch phone, with the display having a protection with tempered glass. There is Snapdragon 615 under the hood, along with 2GB of RAM. The device has a 2400 mAh battery and according to the company, it can last for about two days. There is LTE connectivity as well.

Keeping it slim at 7.3mm, Sony has managed to pack a 13-megapixel Exmor RS camera on the back, and a 5-megapixel camera on the front. The other major advantage of the device over the others in the price range, is the waterproofing Sony has given, and that is why the “Aqua” moniker. It has the IP65 and IP68 rating, and there is no cover on the USB port as well.

The device is running Android Lollipop OS with Sony’s custom UI but there is a lot of Material design strategy used here, which is good. The device is priced at 299 euros, and we are yet to get the details on its availability.

Earlier:
Sony had some devices in the pipeline for the coming months, and although there were talks about the company planning to retire the smartphone business, these devices that are already present, are going to be out in the market. After the Xperia Lounge leaked some information about Xperia Z4 Tablet with a 2K resolution display and a slimmer body, the new leaks point out towards an upcoming smartphone, the Xperia M4 Aqua.

The leaked document could show nothing except for the model number and the Android version, as the doc seems to be more about the OS and software version, than anything else. The Xperia M2 Aqua was released not more than a year ago, and the successor to it is coming soon if the MWC announcement is true. But Sony has been quick as of late, even with the flagship devices.

The M4 Aqua will surely have the IP68 certification for dust and water resistance, and that is why the “Aqua” moniker is added. The other interesting part is that the smartphone will run Android 5.0 out of the box, and that is what the actual leaked document was all about.

No other specs about the M4 Aqua are known, but it might go official very soon, with MWC just a few days from now. The announcement of this is very likely, as Sony has chosen to skip the MWC as platform for the next flagship launch, and it would be too soon to launch the Xperia Z4 as the company had launched two flagships in 2014.
