Samsung is gearing up to release the new Android 9.0 Pie update to its flagship phones – the Galaxy S9 and the Note 9 smartphones. Along with the new features of Android Pie, Samsung might bring back the mighty adoptable storage to its flagship Galaxy devices with the latest software update.
First spotted by SamMobile, the report states that a user from XDA has discovered this new adoptable storage on his Galaxy Note 9 running Android 9.0 Pie beta version. To give some insight, adoptable storage is a feature introduced with Android Marshmallow earlier, which allowed users to insert their external storage (microSD) card to combine with the devices’ built-in storage to make it unified storage. Though Google introduced it with Android Marshmallow, Samsung chose not to utilize that stating it would be beneficiary to budget phones and not the flagship phones since they already have an ample of onboard storage options.
According to the report, the XDA user has shared the screenshot of this new Android feature on his Galaxy Note 9, where we can see two storage options upon inserting a micros SD card. After the phone detects the microSD card, it prompts a message asking how the user wants to use the inserted SD card. The two options include – use for extra phone storage, where a user needs to format his memory card to be clubbed with the internal storage that can further be used for storing apps, files, and media. Do keep in mind, whenever a user chooses to go with this option, he/she can neither connect this formatted microSD card to another device without formatting nor can be used for transferring files from PC to the card itself. Basically, this is an extension to device’s internal storage nothing more than that, while the second option allows the microSD card to be used as portable storage like the standard storage expansion, which we have seen in current Galaxy phones. This option will enable users to transfer files and media across devices.
Storage has been a prominent element in prevailing smartphones – thanks to the massive file sized games and streaming services that allow users to download content off-line. If you are such kind of a user and using the Galaxy S9 or a Galaxy Note 9, then you are in luck to have this new adoptable storage feature along with the latest Android 9.0 Pie update.
