Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 665, 730, & 730G Mobile Platforms
Qualcomm announced three new chipsets under the Snapdragon 700 and 600 series during the Qualcomm’s AI Day in San Francisco. The new Snapdragon 665 Mobile Platform (SM6125) is the successor to Snapdragon 660 Mobile Platform announced in 2017. On the other hand, the company came with Snapdragon 730 (SM7150-AA) and Snapdragon 730G (SM7150-AB) Mobile Platforms for high-end devices. With the Snapdragon 730G, the company is targeting the gaming smartphones. It offers the same specifications as the Snapdragon 730 Mobile Platform but comes with an overclocked GPU.
Both the Snapdragon 600 and 700 series chipsets are quite popular in the market. These days, we are even seeing the Snapdragon 600 chipsets in the sub Rs 10,000 price segment. With these new chipsets, the company mentioned to offer better AI performance along with improvements in gaming and camera capabilities. We should be expecting smartphones powered by these new Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets to be available in the market by mid-2019. While the Snapdragon 665 Mobile Platform is built on 11nm FinFET node, the Snapdragon 730 and 730G are built on Samsung’s 8nm node.
Talking in detail, the Snapdragon 665 Mobile Platform comes with Kryo 260 octa-core CPU featuring 4 performance cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 4 efficiency cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The Adreno 610 GPU on this chipset looks after the graphical performance of the device. It includes the Spectra 165 ISP and supports triple camera setup with telephoto, wide, and ultra-wide sensors. The device can capture up to 48MP high-resolution images with advanced features like hybrid autofocus, zero shutter lag, and more.
With the Snapdragon X12 LTE modem, the chipset can offer up to 600 Mbps download speeds and up to 150 Mbps upload speeds. It also supports dual SIM dual VoLTE and includes other connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, and USB 3.1. However, it only supports up to Full HD+ (2520 x 1080 pixels) display. Coming to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 730G Mobile Platforms, both these chipsets look same on the spec sheet except the display resolution.
While the Snapdragon 730 supports Full HD+ (2520 x 1080 pixels) display, the Snapdragon 730G can offer up to Quad HD+ (3360 x 1440 pixels) resolution and HDR10 playback. Also, both the Snapdragon 730 Mobile Platforms are Wi-Fi 6 ready. Compared to the Snapdragon 730, the Adreno 618 GPU on the Snapdragon 730G offers 20% better performance. Both the chipsets feature Kryo 470 CPU featuring 2 performance cores clocked at 2.2GHz and 6 efficiency cores clocked at 1.8GHz.
The 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra 350 ISP offers flagship range camera capabilities. It supports up to 192MP camera sensor and can record 4K resolution videos at 30 fps. While the Snapdragon 730 supports up to 240fps slow-motion video recording, the Snapdragon 730G powered devices can shoot slow-motion videos up to 960fps. While the Snapdragon 665 comes with only Quick Charge 3.0 support, the Snapdragon 730 & 730G chipsets have Quick Charge 4+ support. Connectivity options on the new Snapdragon 730 Mobile Platforms include Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax-ready, Bluetooth 5.0, and USB Type-C 3.1.
