OnePlus has always been a community-centric brand, or at least that’s how it was until a year ago. The brand was built entirely on word of mouth marketing at the time of the OnePlus One launch. Fast forward two years, customers now have a trust issue with the company. Things have particularly changed now since they have decided to abandon the OnePlus 2 smartphone by not pushing the Nougat update. Do make a note that this is not just limited to OnePlus 2 not getting the Nougat update, but for the sake of giving an example, let’s discuss it.
Back in the month of June 2016, right around the time when Android 7.0 Nougat was announced, it was asked by one of the community members if the OnePlus 2 will receive the Nougat update. Replying to this, the Head of Product Helen Li openly and clearly said that the OnePlus 2 will receive the Nougat Update. In fact, Aaron from OnePlus also replied with a similar answer where he mentioned that the OnePlus 2 will be getting the Nougat update and that they had a meeting about the same.
And ever since then, these two quotes have been a part of multiple titles from various blogs and publications stating the OnePlus 2 will receive the update. Well, here we are now, where the phone is nothing but a forgotten piece of technology buried deep in the shadows of the OnePlus 5. Does this mean OnePlus is following the tracks of some other companies by breaking their own promises? Well, it certainly looks like that since this is not just limited to the Nougat update for OnePlus 2 as mentioned earlier.
Helen had, in fact, made multiple promises on the software development for the OnePlus Two. According to her, the OnePlus two was supposed to receive updates and fixes every 1-2 months. She also said that the company will try to introduce new features upgrades every two months to keep the device fresh. Well, to begin with, this was followed only until the OnePlus 3 was launched. In fact, it has been found that the phone has now received only two updates since the launch of the OnePlus 3 in June 2016. All these instances only go tp say how OnePlus’s focus has shifted over time. This was not the case when they debuted as a brand back in 2013 when the promises made were followed through. With that said, we don’t expect each and every manufacturer to keep supporting the older smartphones forever which is practically impossible over a period of time. However, if you, as a brand has made a promise openly in your forums, the least you are expected is to stand by your word and give your customers a good experience. And not to forget the about the recent incidents which make it hard for the customers to trust the brand.
