OnePlus 3 Vs Samsung Galaxy S7 Vs Xiaomi Mi 5 – Which Charges Faster

People in this fast paced world is running out of patience for a lot of things and waiting for their smartphones devices to charge for hours to complete one thing that annoys most of us. Well, who would like to wait for hours to get their devices charge, right! Not me. The need of fast charger has always been around, but smartphone companies took the time to implement such technologies that will allow fast charging on their devices.

Today, many brands now offer fast charging facility on their handsets; it ranges from technologies used by chipset makers to proprietary ones. Such as Qualcomm these days offer Quick Charge 3.0 on its flagship chipsets in the market, while there are custom fast charging technologies developed by brand itself or in collaboration with someone. There are three devices that we have today claims to offer fast charging using three different technologies. It is the best way to find out which technology proves effective in fast charging current generation flagship handsets.

Below we find out which smartphones charges faster among OnePlus 3, Samsung Galaxy S7 and Xiaomi Mi 5.

OnePlus 3: Dash Charge

OnePlus has tried to outdo themselves and for many parts they have even succeeded in wooing a lot of smartphone consumers with its smart marketing. But does the company deliver on its promises? We find out in this charging test. But first, Let’s talk briefly about what is Dash Charging all about, as we have already explained in detailed about the proprietary fast charging technology introduced by this young Chinese mobile startup.

Dash Charge technology gives maximum output voltage of 5V 4A and claims to power 60% of the OnePlus’s 3000 mAh capacity battery in 30 minutes. Moreover, the brand has also claimed that it would be offering a day’s power with that half an hour charging. While it would be too early to tell anything about that as we are in the initial stage of using the device as our daily driver.

Samsung Galaxy S7: Adaptive Fast Charging

Samsung has always been ahead of its competition may it be in field; Displays, Camera, Performance and Battery life. But for the past couple of years with increase in market competitors, the South Korean brand isn’t the only who could offer all of these in one package. Focus being for fast charging, Samsung was one of the first to utilize the fast charging technology on their handsets with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge support in its older Galaxy S Series.

But company later company had to develop its own fast charging technology because they started using in-house chipset in their flagship models. The proprietary fast charging developed by the South Korean giant is labeled as Adaptive Fast Charging. Adaptive fast charging is Samsung’s fast charging technology that uses 2A against the 4A in the Dash Charge technology used by OnePlus 3. The company claims in most of its handsets that with this technology their device can be charged up to 50% in just 30 minutes.

Xiaomi Mi 5: Quick Charge 3.0/2.0

Xiaomi has been quite in demand for its flagship handsets, the brand which has not been around for more than couple of years has taken on against the big names in terms of offering latest and best-in-class technologies. One of the fields is fast charging, while we have loved it’s fast charging capability on the Redmi Note 3 handset, which charged the 4000 mAh capacity battery within just 2 hours 30 minutes. Then, we expect the 3000 mAh capacity at least in 90 minutes time. But before we go to verdict, let’s talk about the charging technology it uses, i.e. Quick Charge 3.0.

Since, it is being powered by the Snapdragon 820 processor, which supported Quick Charge 3.0, we thought we would charge device up to 80% within 30 minutes. But actually, the fact that Quick Charge 2.0 adaptor is being retailed in the Indian units of the device. The primary reason being getting too much time for BSI certification for Quick Charge 3.0 supported charging adaptors. While for the time being Xiaomi is supplying Quick Charge 2.0 adaptors. This seems to be the case with LG as well since G5 is also powered by Snapdragon 820 and is supported for the Quick Charge 3.0, but brand is offering only 2.0 compatible adaptors. It is a disclaimer that we have tested Mi 5 with Quick Charge 2.0 adaptor only in this charging test.

Verdict

Enough of the charging technology takes, now let’s move on to the fun part, where we have done the charging test of three devices from brands; OnePlus, Samsung, and Xiaomi. Note that we first put all the handsets at 10% charging and stopped using it. Then, all the charging adaptors were switch ON at once. The final result took a lot of time as it needs the patience to find out real life results. So, we waited.

30 Minutes Challenge

After 30 minutes, OP3 was at 75%, which is a 65% jump within 30 minutes, better than what company has claimed. While the Galaxy S7 could charge up to 52% only making its jump to 42% in 30 minutes. Whereas Xiaomi Mi 5 charged up to 57% within the 30 minutes time, thus coming up as a runner-up for the first challenge. The winner was clearly the OnePlus 3.

Full Charging Challenge

Talking about the second challenge, which is the full charging; OnePlus took extra 30 minutes to get to 100%, which is covering 10 to 100 percent within exactly 60 minutes. That is an amazing feat. When OP3 was fully charged Xiaomi Mi 5 was at 91% showing it would take at least 10 minutes to full charge, thus giving a score of 70 minutes, which makes it a runner-up in the fast charging test. Samsung Galaxy S7 came third as it was at 88% and was still estimating 20 minutes extra to get to full charge.
