Apple is rumored to launch a new iPad Pro with a 10.9-inch display in the first week of April, but today it unveiled a new 9.7-inch iPad replacing the iPad Air 2. It lacks the Pro features like Apple Pen and Smart Keyboard support that we see on the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablets. The new iPad comes with 32GB and 128GB storage options comes in Wi-Fi only and LTE variants. The Wi-Fi only variant costs $329 and $429 for the 32GB and 128GB storage variants respectively. On the other hand, the Wi-Fi + LTE variant costs $459 and $559 respectively. Coming to the Indian pricing and availability, the new iPad starts at Rs. 28,900 for the Wi-Fi only variant and Rs. 39,900 for the Wi-Fi + LTE variant. Though there is no exact date mentioned, it will be available in April.

Commenting on the announcement, Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said,

“iPad is the world’s most popular tablet. Customers love the large, 9.7-inch display for everything from watching TV and movies, to surfing the web, making FaceTime calls, and enjoying photos, and now it is even more affordable. New customers and anyone looking to upgrade will love this new iPad for use at home, in school, and for work, with its gorgeous Retina display, our powerful A9 chip, and access to the more than 1.3 million apps designed specifically for it.”

The pre-orders for this new tablet starts from March 24th and shipping begins from next week. It will be available in Space Grey, Silver, and Gold color options. Interestingly, the Rose Gold color is only limited to iPad Pro tablets. The 9.7-inch iPad is slightly thicker and heavier than the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. The 9.7-inch Retina display of the new iPad comes with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution offering a pixel density of 264 ppi. While the iPad Pro tablets came with Apple A9X processor, the new iPad packs only the Apple A9 chipset. Though the RAM capacity is not mentioned, it is said to pack 2GB of RAM as seen o the iPad Air 2. The new iPad includes only two speakers, unlike the quad speaker as seen on the premium iPad Pro tablets.

On the camera front, there is an 8MP rear camera and a 1.3MP front camera that can record videos at 1080p and 720p respectively. The Touch ID fingerprint sensor comes integrated with the physical home button on the front for making Apple Pay payments. As it runs on iOS 10, the user can do multitasking using the split screen feature. Apple also released the $39 (Rs. 3,700 in India) polyurethane smart covers for the new iPad in Charcoal Grey, White, Midnight Blue, Pink Sand and Red colors. The company also mentioned the iPad Mini 4 to come with 128GB storage with the same old tag of $399 (Rs. 34,900) and $529 (Rs. 45,900) for the Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + LTE variants. It will be available in Silver, Gold, and Space Grey color options.
