iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are Water Resistant, But Water Damage Isn’t Covered Under Warranty

It would be an understatement if I’d say the new iPhones are not up to the mark. Yes, indeed the there’s no new design with the new ones except for few minor changes. But we all know that Apple has a done a lot of things right with this one. Many new features that we see with the new phones are completely new to the iPhone lineup and has never been implemented by the company ever before on a smartphone. For the first time, we now have dual rear cameras, which even many of the other leading manufacturers have not implemented. One other important feature is the new IP67 Water Resistant certification.

These are the first iPhones ever to be advertised as “Water & Dust Resistant” as it has an IP67 rating under the International Electrotechnical Standards. This rating is a uniform way of determining water and dust resistance ratings across a wide range of devices. So the way it works is, ‘6’ in the rating is for dust resistance and the ‘7’ is for water resistance. So we can safely say that the iPhones are completely safe against dust. But these iPhones are water resistant only upto 1 meter (3.3 feet) for 30 minutes. On the other hand, if you consider Samsung smartphones like the Galaxy Note 7, it is certified for IP68 which suggests that they have overall water resistance.

To be precise, Apple describes the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus as ‘splash, water and dust resistant’. So what this means is, if you accidentally drop your iPhone in the pool, bathtub, etc. it should be just fine. However, it shouldn’t be used in high-pressure water conditions such as in the direct shower, etc. In fact, Apple strictly warns against attempting to charge a wet iPhone. It could potentially damage the device. Also, if you somehow manage to damage it, it will not be covered under warranty. So you might want to think twice before attempting to play around with your new iPhones in water.
