Apple iPhone6 Back

One of the most important thing to note from yesterday’s Apple event where they unveiled the new iPhones are that some of the previous variants are now being discontinued. This is not a common practice from the company, but this is certainly not the first time. It was expected that the company would discontinue the iPhone 5s, but to our surprise, even the 2014 iPhones are now discontinued. Yes, you heard it right, Apple has discontinued the iPhone 6 & the iPhone 6 Plus along with the iPhone 5S.

This is a bummer because the iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus were still great devices. Both the devices still had a great potential and even today many other devices that are available in the market don’t stand a chance against them. So essentially, we only have three variants of the iPhones available to us. The top of the line iPhones are of course the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. And now the entry level iPhones are the iPhone SE that the company launched last year and the mid-level iPhones are the iPhone 6S and the 6s Plus.

Do make a note that the new iPhones now come with 32GB as base variant and offer 128GB & 256GB as other options. Even the 6S and the 6s Plus got the storage bump. Both the devices are now available with 32GB of base variant as well. This is a good move by the company as it was one of the major concern for many people. However, the iPhone SE storage configuration remains the same with 16GB and 64GB. So basically the company has now focused on keeping limited options instead of offering a variety of different variants to choose from.

Also, the iPhone 6S and the 6S Plus got a price cut as well. This means the last year’s variants will now cost you $100 less i.e. the iPhone 6s will be available for $99 and the iPhone 6s Plus will now cost $199 on contract. Another thing to note here is that, although the company has discontinued some of the previous variants, it doesn’t mean you are completely cut out from the loop here. Apple will continue to support these devices by providing software updates etc. Not sure until when, but as of now the devices which will receive the iOS 10 updates are as follows –

If you own any of the above mentioned devices, then you need not worry as you will be getting the iOS 10 update once the company officially starts rolling out the OTA. But it would be safe to sell the devices when you can and upgrade to the new ones while you can. Let us know what do you think about this decision of discontinuing the previous variants and which one do you have. Stay tuned for more news about the new iPhones.
