Update: The Asus Zenfone Zoom that was recently made official in China is now all set to launch in India on January 22nd. Almost after one year of the announcement at the CES 2015, the device was first launched in Taiwan last month and at the ongoing CES 2016, the company has announced the device for selected international markets. In China, the 64GB variant of Zenfone Zoom is priced at 2799 Yuan (approx $433 / Rs. 29,000 ) while the 128GB variant costs you 3199 Yuan (approx $495 / Rs. 33,000).
Earlier: Dec3, 2015 – As announced earlier Asus had officially launched the Asus Zenfone Zoom smartphone in Taiwan. While the device was first showcased at the CES in early 2015, it took 12 months to reach the customers. The device sports same specs as Zenfone 2 but comes with an improved rear camera. It runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with customized ZenUI laid on top it.
The device will be available in two variants with 64GB and 128GB internal storages priced at TWD 13,990 (approx $425 / Rs. 28,500) and TWD 15,990 (approx $490 / Rs. 32,600) respectively. As of now the device is available only in Black color while White color variant will be launched by the end of this month. The company hasn’t mentioned about the international launch of the Zenfone Zoom, but we can expect it to be launched in other markets in next couple of months.
Earlier: Nov 15, 2015 – Asus had first showcased the Zenfone Zoom at the CES held in January 2015 along with Zenfone 2. At that time, the company announced the device to be priced at $399 (approx Rs. 26,500) before taxes and will be available from Q2 2015. Though the device wasn’t available to the consumers, instead it was relaunched at IFA 2015 along with the other Zenfone series smartphones.
Now the device was spotted on TENAA with the model number ‘Z00XSB’ and is confirmed to launch on December 1st in Taiwan. It sports the same specifications as mentioned earlier and the listing is of 64GB variant while it may also launch in 32GB and 128GB storage variants. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming days.
Earlier: Sep 2, 2015 – We had absolutely loved the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom last year, except for its not-so-good battery life. But at the same time, the device was more of a camera phone than a smartphone with a specialized camera. Now, such ideas are not just of Samsung’s and Nokia’s, as ASUS just announces its ZenFone Zoom device with a camera having a 3x optical zoom. It is no competition to the 10x optical zoom of K Zoom, but what is offered is all in a thickness of 11.95mm at its thickest point.
The ZenFone Zoom is said to be the thinnest smartphone that packs a camera with 3x optical zoom, and the camera actually is a 13-megapixel lens with f/2.0 aperture. The camera comes with optical image stabilization and the laser autofocus (the same one used in LG G3, G Flex 2), Dual LED flash as well as a full manual mode. The flat mechanics used in the camera module keep the zooming module embedded and no part of the camera pops out while zooming in.
We’re told this is a 5.5-inch device with a Full HD resolution, but there is no mention about the chipset being used, yet. The latest ZenFone series with the PixelMaster technology were all powered by Intel Atom processors, and we expect some changes here, in the ZenFone Zoom.
The trade-off here could be the screen size, and the weight of 185 grams, which could make this hard to hold and capture, but we are trusting Asus on giving options that can make capturing not a task. While the availability is set at second quarter of 2015, the price is already known. Asus is bringing this out for a price of $399, and the company ,stressed on saying how hard it was for them to pack in all the stuff for such a price. We’ll know how true that is, with a hands-on very soon.
