Apple & Samsung Dominate Christmas 2015 sales with 69% Device Activations

The Christmas celebrations are now ended, and we have seen some huge discounts and promotional offers by the smartphone manufacturers to make use of this holiday season. According to the report from Flurry, a mobile analytics company acquired by Yahoo, Apple has dominated this Christmas season by capturing almost half of market share. We can’t see many Asian manufacturers since the Christmas day is not the biggest gift-giving day in many Asian countries unlike the singles days in China.
To be perfect, out of the total device activations during this festive season, Apple alone has a share of 49.1% in 2015, but it is lower than the 51.3% compared to last year. Samsung is the only manufacturer in the top three positions to see some growth in their share. Compared to 17.7% from 2014, the company has now managed to reach 19.8% in 2015. Microsoft has seen an almost 3X drop in 2015 which had settled for a market share of just 2% compared to 5.8% in 2014.
LG stands at fourth position with a market share of 1.7% of this festive season, and Xiaomi is the debutant in this list and is also the only manufacturer that doesn’t sell its devices officially in the western markets. Talking about the form factors, the market size of the phablets is now more than doubled from 13% in 2014 to 27% in 2015. The increase in the phablet market comes at the cost of medium (3.5” – 4.9” screens) and small (under 3.5” screens) sized devices.
The launch of iPhone 6s Plus might also be the boost for this massive growth, but the major share comes from the Android devices. Half of the Android devices activated this festive seasin are phablets while 12% of iOS devices activated are phablets. Apart from the device activations, we also have some details about the App installs.
There is almost 120% growth in the app installs on the Christmas day, compared to the earlier days of this month. December 25th is also biggest day of the year in terms of app installs. As seen with the earlier Christmas sales, 2015 is nothing short regarding huge bump in sales for the brands and app installations for the developers.
