As we exclusively covered earlier, Reliance is expected to launch the commercial services of the Jio 4G network from September 1st. Unlike any other Indian service provider, Jio 4G has its own suite of apps that offers live TV, music streaming, on-demand content, cloud storage and others. All these apps are available starting from the launch of its 4G services to Reliance employees, as the commercial launch is expected to happen in the next couple of days, now the company is renaming their apps along with new logos. Earlier too, we have seen few changes around the names and logo of their apps.
It looks like this new strategy right before the commercial launch which is happening on 1st September is done timely because once the Jio services are public we can see many new users on board. The current application naming is good but not easy for everyone to remember especially when we are talking about the rural consumers. The earlier names i.e; “Video On Demand” is hard to not just remember but also understand, while the new name i.e.; JioCinema clearly hints that its around movies. Since most of the Indians can relate Cinema to talkies/theatres, the new app naming strategy will help them reach the masses easily and help the users remember the names.
On the same front, the Jio Drive app has been renamed to Jio storage which refers to storing the data online, though Jio Cloud could have been a better name in this case but that’s suggested from a geek’s point of view. The Jio Beats to JioMusic change makes sense again since it refers to a music application and reliance is offering all the licensed music for free under the app with the name perfectly making the offering. Even the live streaming which was earlier named as Jio Play is now renamed to JioTV.
The transition has already begun & within a day all the app names would be changed in the Google Play Store, while you should be seeing the iOS app updates on the Apple Store around the end of this week, something that’s close to the commercial launch. We are also tipped that apart from these 4 name changes there are internal discussions going on, following which we should be seeing more application name changes. Do make a note that reliance has launched a suite of 11 applications that cater to different type of content and is marketed towards different users.
