Last month Google’s new Nexus launcher made its first appearance and the whole internet was going crazy about it. Not because of the fact that it was a great new launcher but because of all the new changes that brought to the table. It came with a new swipe up gesture for accessing the app drawer and it also had a fixed time and date widget along with a new Google Tab on top.

Now apparently the app has been updated and now it has been renamed as well. Well, guess what the name is? Pixel launcher. Yes, it is not surprising at all. Considering the fact the smartphones which are supposed to have this launcher have been renamed now, we saw this coming. The app also comes with a second component for changing the wallpaper and performing the search.  You can now download the new APK and start using the new Pixel launcher right away.

Earlier: The new Android 7.0 Nougat update from Google is right around the corner. It looks like the company is expected to launch the new software, before the launch of its new smartphones i.e. the Nexus device(s). Every year Google announces the new software and then after a couple of months, the software is made official along with its new hardware to go with the. The company launched the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X for the year 2015. But this year, things might change a little. But apparently, it is saving something for the Nexus after all.

According to new reports, the company is planning to launch a new launcher to go with its upcoming Nexus line of smartphones. We have the first looks on this launcher, and it appears to be redesigned. The most important thing to notice here is that there is no app drawer shortcut this time. Looking at the images, it seems that users will have to swipe up from the bottom to access their Apps. This new gesture is denoted by a small white arrow pointing upwards. Also, note that the lack of the app drawer icon frees up an extra space to add another icon.

It looks like you can still swipe right to access the Google Now page. You also have the tap to search button on the top. According to the source, this launcher was not running on a device with Android Nougat. It appears that there will be some neat integration of this launcher with the upcoming new Google Assistant. Also, this is not the first time we heard that Google might be getting rid of the App drawer. But indeed now we do have a first look on this, and this gives us an idea of what to expect from the company in future.

However, this might take some time to get used to, since app drawer has been there since the existence of Android and suddenly adopting some other way of accessing it will not be welcomed by many. But it all depends on how they implement it and we just have to wait and see what the company does here. So stay tuned for info on this in future.

Thanks to Rajesh (@epandu) for alerting us regarding the app drawer shortcut. The App drawer is still present but there would be no shortcut to the same directly on the home screen.
