In 2018, Xiaomi has launched a few decent smartphones including Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi 5. While these devices offer much better value than any other devices at their respective price ranges, the company never managed to have enough stock of these devices. Now, the latest news suggests the company to soon launch a new Redmi smartphone in the new S-series. The device will be called as Redmi S2 and packs entry-level specifications. It will be the company’s most affordable smartphone with dual cameras. We hope the company gets ready with enough stock for the launch of its new device.
Xiaomi Redmi S2 with HD+ 18:9 Display & 12MP Dual Rear Cameras Leaked
(April 17th, 2018)
Talking about the specifications, the Redmi S2 comes with 18:9 display offering HD+ (1440 x 720 pixels) resolution. As of now, there is no information about the exact screen size. Under the hood, it comes powered by a couple of years old Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor. We have seen this same chipset in the Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Note 5 smartphones priced under Rs. 10,000. It might come in 2GB and 3GB RAM variants with at least a couple of storage options. There will also be a MicroSD card slot for further expanding the storage on this device.
Coming to the cameras, there is a dual camera setup on the rear featuring 12MP primary sensor from Sony or OmniVision and a 5MP secondary sensor from Samsung. For selfies, the Redmi S2 comes with a single 5MP sensor from Samsung. The cameras on this device will be supporting EIS & portrait mode. While there is no information about the fingerprint sensor, the device is said to support face unlock. With all these specifications, the smartphone will be backed by a 3,080mAh non-removable battery. However, we don’t think the company will be adding fast charging support.
It will be running on Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box. Xiaomi will be mainly targetting India and China with its new affordable camera-centric smartphone. If the company goes for a very aggressive price tag, the Redmi S2 might come out with polycarbonate body instead of the metal body. Next week, the company will be launching the Mi 6X smartphone in China with 20MP front and rear cameras.
Xiaomi Redmi S2 Confirmed to Launch on May 10th
(May 4th, 2018)
Xiaomi now officially confirmed to launch the affordable Redmi S2 smartphone on May 10th in China. The company is partnering with the Chinese e-commerce website Suning for the launch of Redmi S2. Even the launch event will be held at the Suning’s headquarters in Nanjing. The company mentioned the Redmi S2 as a selfie-centric smartphone. It comes with a 12MP + 5MP dual rear cameras and a single 16MP front camera. The Redmi S2 will be the most affordable Xiaomi smartphone to come with an 18:9 display.
While we expected it to come with stock Android, the device actually comes with Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box. The Redmi S2 is expected to be priced cheaper than the Redmi Note 5. It will be available in several color options including Blue, Black, Pink, Gold, Red, and Gray color options. While the China launch is scheduled for May 10th, the India launch of Redmi S2 can be expected to happen in the following weeks.
Xiaomi today launched its latest budget smartphone under the new S series. As seen in the leaked images, the Redmi S2 looks similar to the previously launched Redmi Note 5 Pro and Mi 6X smartphones. It comes with a metal unibody design and sports a 2.5D curved glass on the front. Talking about the specifications, the Redmi S2 sports a 5.99-inch HD+ (1440 × 720 pixels) with 18:9 aspect ratio.
Under the hood is the 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and 3GB/4GB of RAM. While the 3GB RAM variant comes with 32GB of internal storage, the 4GB RAM variant offers 64GB of onboard storage. There is also a dedicated MicroSD card slot for storage expansion up to 256GB. It runs on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box.
In terms of optics, there is a dual camera setup on the rear with 12MP and 5MP sensors. For selfies, there is a 16MP front-facing camera. The device also supports PDAF and AI portrait mode for better photos and videos. It is backed by a 3,080mAh battery and lacks fast charging support. The Redmi S2 supports dual SIM dual standby using the triple card slot. On the rear, we can also spot the circular fingerprint sensor.
Along with the fingerprint sensor, the device can be securely unlocked using the face unlock option. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, IR Blaster, 3.5mm audio jack, and a MicroUSB 2.0 port. It measures 160.73 × 77.26 × 8.1 mm and weighs 170 grams. The Redmi S2 will be available in Gold, Rose Gold, and Gray color options.
Talking about the pricing, the base variant with 3GB RAM is priced at 999 Yuan (approx $160 / Rs. 10,500) and 4GB RAM variant costs 1299 Yuan (approx $200 / Rs. 13,750). Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more details about the upcoming Xiaomi smartphones.
