Xiaomi Redmi 5 & Redmi 5 Plus with 18:9 Displays & MIUI 9 Launched in China, Pricing Starts from Rs 7,999

Xiaomi had recently launched a new entry-level smartphone called Redmi 5A in India. Now, the company unveiled the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones in China with the new 18:9 display technology. The Redmi 5 is also the most affordable smartphone with an 18:9 display in the market. There are also leaks about the Redmi Note 5, but the company hasn’t mentioned about its launch. As of now, there is no information about the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus launch in India.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 & Redmi 5 Plus with 18:9 Displays Confirmed to Launch on Dec 7th
The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus might come with the similar design. As of now, there is not much information about the Redmi 5 Plus smartphone. Talking about the Redmi 5, the smartphone sports a 5.7-inch display with HD+ (1440 x 720 pixels) resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it will come powered by Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor. The device will be available in 3GB and 4GB RAM variants with 32GB and 64GB storage options.
With the full-screen display, the device might come with on-screen navigation buttons. As seen on the earlier launched Redmi devices, the Redmi 5 will also feature a rear-facing fingerprint sensor. In the camera department, we might see a 12MP camera on the rear and a 5MP camera on the front. Both these cameras will come accompanied by a LED flash. It will be backed by a 3,300mAh battery and still comes with MicroUSB 2.0 port.
Compared to the Redmi 4, the Redmi 5 will be offering new 18:9 display with slightly improved specifications. However, the Redmi 4 came with a bigger 4,100mAh battery. Both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus might run on the latest MIUI 9 out of the box. Compared to their predecessors, we also expect these upcoming devices to cost slightly on a higher side. Redmi 5 & Redmi 5 Plus Spotted in Press Renders

As we mentioned above, Xiaomi has already announced to launch the all-new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones in China on December 7th. With these new devices, Xiaomi will be introducing the 18:9 display technology in the budget segment. Earlier launched the Mi MIX 2 came with 18:9 Full HD + display and a premium price tag. Both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are expected to cost less than 999 Yuan in China. Today, we leaked press renders of the devices also reveals the design.
On the design front, both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus looks exactly same. From the rear, the design of these devices is similar to the Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4 smartphones. There is a primary camera along with a single LED flash and a circular fingerprint sensor on the rear. On the top are the 3.5mm audio jack, IR blaster, and a secondary microphone. Both these devices will come with on-screen navigation buttons. The volume rocker and power button are placed on the right edge of the device.
As seen with the Redmi Note 5A, the Redmi 5 devices might also include a dedicated MicroSD card slot. The device will be available in Blue, Black, Gold, and Rose Gold color options. We hope to see the USB Type-C port instead of the MicroUSB 2.0 port on these devices. The device will be running on Android 7.1 Nougat based MIUI 9 out of the box. As announced earlier, Xiaomi has officially launched two new smartphones in affordable Redmi series in China. The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are the successors to last year’s Redmi 4. With the Redmi 5 devices, the company is introducing the 18:9 display technology in the budget segment. Talking about the pricing, the Redmi 5 with 2GB and 3GB of RAM is priced at 799 Yuan and 899 Yuan respectively. On the other hand, the Redmi 5 Plus is priced at 999 Yuan and 1299 Yuan for the 3GB and 4GB RAM variants.
Both the devices will be available in Black, Gold, Rose Gold, and Blue color options. The Redmi 5 comes with a 5.7-inch 18:9 display and offers HD+ (1440 x 720 pixels) resolution. It is powered by 64-bit Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor coupled with Adreno 506 GPU. The device comes in 2GB and 3GB RAM variants with 16GB and 32GB storage options. There is also a MicroSD card slot for further expansion of storage. It runs on Android 7.1 Nougat based MIUI 9 out of the box.
On the other hand, the Redmi 5 Plus offers a slightly bigger 5.99-inch display with Full HD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels) resolution. It comes powered 2.0GHz Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor with the same Adreno 506 GPU. The Redmi 5 Plus will be available in 3GB and 4GB RAM variants with 32GB and 64GB of internal storage respectively. In the camera department, both the devices come with a 12MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP selfie camera with Beauty Mode 3.0.
There is also a fingerprint sensor placed on the rear of the device. On the connectivity front, the devices include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, IR Blaster, 3.5mm Audio jack, and a MicroUSB 2.0 port. While the Redmi 5 comes with a 3,300mAh battery, the Redmi 5 Plus offers a bigger 4,000mAh battery. With these two new devices, Xiaomi is also providing a transparent protective case within the package.
