Our Xiaomi Mi MIX Edgeless Display Cracked from 1 Ft Drop – Video
The Mi MIX Concept smartphone is the first of its kind device from Xiaomi. While the company says the device to feature an edgeless display on the front, we can find a very thin bezel on the top and the side edges. There are devices like Sharp Aquos Crystal smartphone and Hisense Magic Mirror tablet which were also launched with a similar form factor. But coming to Xiaomi Mi MIX, it is built with ceramic including the frame and physical buttons and additionally there is no protection for the display.
While we already made the videos of unboxing, benchmark comparison, and camera review of the Mi MIX, yesterday we started recording the FAQ video. The Mi MIX was placed on top of a cardboard box which is slightly less than 1 feet in height. The provided leather case was removed as we were recording the video. It was firmly placed on top of the box using the Xiaomi’s Bee shaped phone holder. While all the arrangements were done for recording the video, somehow the suction of the mobile holder was released and the Mi MIX dropped from the box. Though the device had not fallen flat on the floor, the impact on the edge was then passed on to the display glass which resulted in the hairline crack.

Even after the drop, the display is working fine and the voice call audio is as clear as earlier. The only solution is that now the display along with digitizer need to be changed, and we don’t think that this is going to be a cheaper affair since its a display which is hard to find. However, nothing might have happened if Xiaomi had opted for Gorilla Glass protection on the top. At the launch event, the company showcased the body and ceramic back panel to come with seamless connectors where there is no glue or any other adhesive used for attaching the both.
Though there are many China-based resellers selling the smartphone spares online, we may not find any spares for Xiaomi Mi MIX as it is manufactured in limited quantities. The device is officially available from November 4th in China and comes in two variants with 4GB and 6GB of RAM. In case if you are living outside of China, you can now pre-order the Mi MIX from here. With more 90% screen-to-body ratio, the display is more prone to damage while it is dropped from small heights. The Mi MIX with one of the most beautiful display cannot be used roughly like any other smartphone.
