Upcoming Mid-Range Nokia Handsets To Be Powered Xiaomi’s Surge S1 chipset

by Karthik Iyer 2

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi launched its new chipset called the Surge S1 earlier this year. This is the company’s in-house chipset which houses an octa-core processor that consists of four 2.2GHz Cortex-A53 cores to take care of the heavy loads and four 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores for comparatively lighter day-to-day tasks. Overall, it is a great chipset and in fact, it is powering some of the company’s relatively new smartphones like Mi 5c. However, now it looks like this chipset will also be used by some smartphones other than Xiaomi.

According to the new reports which we have some few of the publication in China, HMD Global has signed a deal with Xiaomi to bring the Surge S1 to some of the upcoming Nokia phones in future. Yes, apparently the Finnish company is planning on fitting some of the upcoming smartphones with Xiaomi’s Surge S1 chipset. It has been reported that only the mid-range smartphones from Nokia will be powered by these, which is not a bad thing since most the smartphones which Nokia has launched so far mid-range devices and are doing well in the market.

However, one of thing which remains to be seen if these devices will be China-only or even the global units will be fitted with them. But considering that Surge S1 is made by Xiaomi, it might not handle worldwide LTE networks very well, especially the U.S. carriers, since adopting smartphone to the North American market involves a lot of specific changes in the chipset level.

With all that being said, this is indeed a huge step in the right direction for Xiaomi. Considering the fact that there aren’t a lot of chipset manufacturers in the market other than Qualcomm and MediaTek, Xiaomi could flourish very well in this segment. Having said that, we would like to know your thoughts on this. Would you be interested in buying a smartphone powered by a Xiaomi chipset? Be sure to let us know by dropping a comment down below.
