Spice Dream Uno Android One Phone FAQ and Important Tips

The Spice Dream Uno Mi-498 is one of the first Android One phones, and it was launched alongside the Micromax A1 and the Karbonn Sparkle V Red smartphones. There are several users asking about different features, good and bad about the Dream Uno. We have collected all of them and following is the list of frequently asked questions, and a few important tips.

Can I move apps from phone storage to SD card?

Yes, this is very much possible although there are restrictions, just like in most of the Android devices because some apps do not allow the phone to move them, but for the mid-range games like Temple Run, Subway Surfers, these could be moved from the phone storage (where these are initially downloaded) to SD card.

Will the Spice Dream One phone get Android L update?

Google has promised so, and with two years of software support, the least one can expect is the update to Android L OS version, the upcoming one that was announced recently.

How much is the internal storage on the Spice phone?

All the phones in the first series of Android One come with 4GB internal storage but in actual, about 2.2GB of storage is available to the users in the end. You can place a MicroSD card for the expanded storage though, still 2.2GB is what you get internally in the Spice Dream Uno.

There is an application called Spice Cloud in the phone, what is it?

Spice Cloud is a cloud backup service app from Spice, and that is going to give 10GB of free cloud storage service for the phone users. It comes with security and anti-theft features, and one can use the same Spice Cloud to sync the content across devices. Nothing really different from the major cloud backup services, but this is from Spice.

How to Import contacts from my SIM card to phone?

Transferring contacts is quite easy, and it is possible from several sources and not just your SIM card. To transfer, open the People app (contacts app if you are confused), and there you will find the option Export/Import. Select that and there, select the source from where to import. You need to choose SIM card as you want to transfer the contacts from there, and in the next step you will have to mention the destination where the contacts need to be transferred to.

Do these Android One phones have FM Radio built-in?

Yes there is FM Radio, and all you need to do is to plug in the headphones, and start the FM Radio app. You can also choose to record FM from within the same app.

What are the pre-installed apps in Spice Dream Uno?

Thankfully, you are not going to get a big bloatware here. It is just those standard Google Play Services apps, apart from Flipkart, Flipkart eBooks store, Quickoffice, FM Radio and Spice Cloud.

Can I set Hindi as the default language?

Yes, you can. To do that, you need to go to Settings > Personal > Language & input and here, the first option of Language will give a big list of languages. Go towards the bottom in the list and you will see Hindi there. Select that and give a few seconds for the change to be done.

GPS uses a lot of battery. Is there anything I can do about it?

If you are traveling and using GPS, there isn’t much you can do about the GPS settings except for using the mobile network to determine the location rather than using the GPS locator directly. To tweak the setting and force the Spice Android One phone to use the mobile network or Wi-Fi, go to Settings > Personal > Location > Mode > and here select “Battery saving”.

Some apps in my phone are using a lot of memory. How to clear them?

In many cases, you will need the app but that particular app is eating up a lot of storage. This is common with games and social network apps such as Facebook, where whatever you browse gets downloaded (images). To clear that regularly, you need to Settings > Apps > select app (for example, Facebook) and you will be taken to the app info page, where you need to hit “Clear data”. Wherever it is possible, tap on “Move to SD card” so that at least the app gets transferred to SD, although the data is stored in the internal storage.

How to activate Google Now on my Android One phone?

Tap and hold anywhere on the empty area of the home screen and you will see three options. Select “Settings” in that, and you will see Google Now turned off in the first setting. Turn it On, and you will be taken through a few pages for the setup of Google Now on your Android One smartphone.

The phone vibrates on every key press. How do I turn it off?

This vibrate on touch is turned on by default on Google Keyboard. While you are typing something, in the keyboard there is a comma key (second from left in the bottom row). Hold it and you will see a wrench icon. Tap on that, and you will be taken to Google Keyboard settings. Under General > the option you need to turn off is “Vibrate on keypress”.

How to set up SIM Card lock on Spice Dream Uno?

To setup SIM card lock, you need to go to Settings > Personal > Security > SIM Card Lock and there, tap on “Set up SIM card lock”. Select the SIM for which you want to have the lock, and then tap on “Lock SIM card” and enter a PIN that you need to remember later.

Which are the SIM cards supported by the Spice Android One phone?

The SIM cards that are supported are Micro SIM cards, and the phone supports two SIM cards. Both the SIM cards support 3G connectivity.

Does the Spice Dream Uno support USB OTG?

We tried checking the USB OTG with a 4GB and a 16GB drive, and both were not detected and even the USB OTG checker apps said there is on OTG functionality in the device.

Can I turn Internet hotspot ON and share my phone internet?

The hotspot can be turned on, and the SIM card which is connected to the data network is automatically shown for the internet sharing. To share the internet using mobile hotspot option, you need to go to Settings > Wireless & Network > More… > Tethering & portable hotspot. It is not just the Wi-Fi tethering (hotspot) option but also the USB tethering and Bluetooth tethering options available to share the data network with other devices around.

What are the sensors available on the phone?

The phone has all the basic sensors needed for the controls of functions. These include Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, Light Sensor, Gyroscope, Orientation sensor as well as Magnetic Field sensor, motion sensor, rotation vector sensor, Gravity sensor and linear acceleration sensor.

Are there LED notification lights on the Spice phone?

Yes there is a notification indicator LED light on the top above the display, right above the earpiece where there is a section for the light as well as for the sensors for the brightness control.

Will Spice Dream Uno Android Lollipop update?

Yes, the device is slated to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update in December this year. Since, Google initially announced that Android One will be receiving the latest Android OS updates. It was clear that the Android Lollipop will arrive as soon as possible, now rejoice Dream Uno users.
