Earlier this month, Samsung started accepting the pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold smartphone in the US. The company even scheduled events in Hong Kong and Shanghai on the coming Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Now, the latest reports suggest both the launches are postponed indefinitely. While the company said the delay was due to the last minute issues with the venue, we don’t think the same issue occurs in both the countries. We think it has something to do with the #foldgate. The review units shared with the US media have started facing display issues just a day after the unboxing/hands-on videos went live.
Most of them complained about the breaking of the display on their units. While removing the plastic protective layer on the top is the issue for many reviewers, the display also went dead on a few other units as well. Samsung also came out with the statement saying they have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided and will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter. The company also particularly said that there will no delay in the shipping of the devices. With the delays in Asian markets, we don’t think the company will go ahead as per the previous plan in the US.
The early adopters who spent $1980 don’t want to get their hands on this fragile device. Samsung is yet to find the reason for the displays getting broken even after the protective layer was left intact. The company has already received many preorders for the device and will be officially launched the device in the US on April 26th. We hope the issues with the Galaxy Fold doesn’t go as bad as the Galaxy Note 7 debacle for the company. It comes with a 7.3-inch foldable Dynamic AMOLED display with 4.2:3 aspect ratio and a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED cover display with 21:9 aspect ratio. The issue is only with the primary foldable display which comes with plastic protection instead of glass.
Under the hood, it packs 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform coupled with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. It runs on the Android 9.0 Pie based OneUI of the box and not any apps are optimized for both the weird aspect ratios. The Galaxy Fold sports a total of six camera sensors. The notch on the foldable display sports 10MP Dual Pixel camera with f/1.9 aperture and an 8MP depth camera with f/2.2 aperture. On the rear, there is a triple camera setup featuring 12MP Dual Pixel camera with variable aperture (f/2.4-f/1.5), a 12MP telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture, and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture.
There is even a single 10MP camera with f/2.2 aperture on the top of the cover display. It packs 4,380mAh battery and supports fast charging and wireless fast charging. As seen on the Galaxy S10e, the Galaxy Fold also sports a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. There are also AKG-tuned stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. The company also officially confirmed to launch this device in the Indian market. However, there is no exact launch date mentioned as of now. Stay tuned on PhoneRadar for more details!
