Today at the Galaxy Unpacked event in New York, Samsung officially launched the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus smartphone. With the launch of new flagship devices, hope the company gains back the trust they lost after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. Here, let’s talk about the smaller device among the two, the device comes with a bigger display than the last year’s Galaxy S7 Edge. Last years, Galaxy S7 devices are one of the best-selling smartphones in the world, and now Galaxy S8 devices seem to continue the same legacy. One thing that needs a special attention is the presence of 3.5mm audio port when most of the other major manufacturers are ditching it.
With the Samsung Dex, the Galaxy S8 can be used as a full-fledged computer by connecting Monitor and Keyboard. The Dex features two USB ports, an HDMI slot, an Ethernet jack and a USB-C port. It works same as the Continuum introduced with the Windows 10 Mobile OS powered Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL smartphones. The Galaxy S8 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box with the Samsung Experience 8.1 UI on top. Along with the new features from the latest Nougat OS, the company is also offering tons of new in-house features that will be exclusive to the new flagship device. To bring better productivity, the device also packs Microsoft apps like Skype, One Drive, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
It sports 5.8-inch Infinity display with Super AMOLED panel offering Quad HD+ (2960 x 1440 pixels) resolution. The corners of the display are curved instead of sharp. It comes protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and features Always-On Display functionality. With the edge display, there are also exclusive edge screen functionality & shortcuts. Coming to the processor, the U.S and Korean variants are powered by the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 octa-core SoC with Kryo custom cores. The European and Asian countries will get the Exynos 8895 SoC powered variant. Both these processors are built on 10nm FinFET processor and support Gigabit LTE modem for reaching the download speeds up to 1Gbps.
The Galaxy S8 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage that can be expanded up to 256GB using the MicroSD card slot. There is also a 6GB RAM variant with 128GB of storage, but that is only limited to the Chinese market. Just like the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7, the Galaxy S8 is also IP68 certified making it both water and dust resistant. The built-in virtual assistant, Bixby will be first seen on this device. It comes integrated right into the OS and can control the apps in the same as using fingers. Though the device comes with a huge 5.8-inch display, the minimal bezels make the device measure just 148.9 x 68.1 x 8 mm and weighs 152 grams.
As there is no physical home button, the bottom part of the display acts as a virtual button with pressure sensitive technology and the fingerprint sensor is now shifted to the rear of the device. Talking about the cameras, there is a 12MP dual pixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture, dual tone LED flash, and OIS. For selfies, there is an 8MP autofocus front camera with HDR and screen flash feature. It supports 71 languages globally and includes themes to customize the UI of the device. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. It is backed by a 3,000mAh non-removable battery and supports adaptive fast charging.
It comes in single SIMor dual SIM variants depending on the markets and accept only nano SIM card. The Galaxy S8 comes with the SAR value of 0.315 W/kg at the head and 1.27 W/kg at the body.
