Update : 08/07/2016 – Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic games Edition in celebration of Rio 2016 Olympic Games. As reported earlier, the device features a new color scheme which uses the official colors of the Olympic Games as its palette. This change continues to the software as well where the company has altered the home screen and the lock screen and a couple of apps like the dialer, messaging and the notification bar up top. The smartphones will be given to each athlete competing in the Rio 2016 Olympic games along with the Gear IconX wireless earbuds. For the rest of the world, there will only be 2,016 of these available to purchase starting July 18th in select countries, for which the pricing is not yet revealed. It would have also been better if the company would have given the Galaxy J Max to the athletes, as it would allow better media consumption experience with the larger display, but then it’s company’s decision.
Earlier – Samsung is reportedly planning to launch a limited-edition Galaxy S7 Olympic series of phones ahead of the sports event scheduled to start off August 7 in Brazil. The company is known for releasing special-edition of its flagship devices. According to the source, Samsung is working on a project dubbed the “Hero2_Olympic_edition”.
Sources also claimed that the company is working on developing a dedicated app code-named “IOC_Olympic_app” and “Rio2016_WOW_Olympic_app,” themes and a variety of virtual reality apps. Although it is not confirmed, but the use of the word “Hero2” in the code–name supports the rumors, as the Galaxy S7 series was internally known as “Hero2” and the predecessor Galaxy S6 was named “Hero” in their development stages.
This special edition is expected to come with pre-loaded VR content surrounding the games, and it is also anticipated that it will come with the Gear VR bundled with it for free. Samsung has been a long partner of the Olympic games, and it will not be a surprise to see if this variant gets launched publicly for users. This phone is expected to sport the same internals as that of the original variant launched early this year. The only difference lies in the color options, where this device comes with customized colors for the power button, earpiece, volume rockers and ring around the camera and the flash cut-out.
Previously the Galaxy Note 3 also had a similar variant. An Olympics special edition variant was launched for that smartphone also. Recently, the company also launched an “Injustice Edition” variant of the S7 Edge. It had the custom theme to match the black exterior look of the device to give a premium feel while using it. With virtual reality getting a huge attention year after year, it would make sense for Samsung to take its Olympic partnership further with a Galaxy S7 Olympic Edition and create some exclusive content for the consumers.
However, at this point, we have no official confirmation from the manufacturer about this device. Hence, pricing and availability are also unknown. But note that, the “Injustice Edition” of the S7 Edge was priced at about $1230, so we expect this device to be priced similarly on the same lines as it appears it will be bundled with the Gear VR and other accessories. Stay tuned for more updates.
