Chinese manufacturer ZTE’s sub-brand Nubia has brought its first game-centric Red Magic smartphone to the Indian market. Released earlier this year, the Red Magic gaming phone arrives into the country right after the release of ASUS ROG gaming phone, which was released a couple of months ago. The Red Magic is undoubtedly one of a kind gaming smartphone launched in India, offering a unique Diamond-Cut design in the thinnest form factor possible alongside giving a wholesome gaming experience.
The game-centric phone is powered by last year’s Snapdragon 835 chipset, which is still considered to be a powerful chipset and is tuned by Nubia especially to handle better gaming capabilities. The chipset further is paired with Adreno 540 GPU, followed by 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage without any microSD expansion. As for the cameras, it features a single 24MP camera sensor on the rear with an aperture of f/1.7, which embeds in a peculiar hexagon shaped design and on the front, the device hosts an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture — the phone ships with Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box and lastly a 3800mAh battery powers the phone. For authentication, it features a fingerprint sensor on the rear, which is also hexagaon shaped, following the overall diamond-cut design
Since we had an early hands-on with the Nubia Red Magic device, here are some of the top few features we found interesting on this phone –
First and foremost feature that draws focus on the Red Magic phone is the Game Boost mode. As the Red Magic is a game-centric phone, it is pretty evident that it should perform games better without any intrusions. Imagine you’re playing a resource intensive game and you are constantly being annoyed by your app notifications, that’s where the GameBoost mode comes into play. It essentially turns off all your notifications and also speeds up frame rates. This is indeed a prominent and useful feature that every gaming phone should adapt to.
Moreover, the Game Boost offers a physical switch on the right side of the phone to toggle on/off the boost mode. It is pretty convenient while you are gaming, instead of manually toggling in the settings. Additionally, the game boost mode also allows locking your navigation keys during the gameplay, to eradicate your accidental touches of the keys. The Game Boost mode also triggers the back-light LED colors as well along with changing its patterns.
RGB LED Back Strip
Coming to the RGB lighting on the rear, this RGB LED Strip adds more insight to this Red Magic gaming smartphone. The LED strip brings you 16 million color combinations paired with four different lighting effects.
Different customizable patterns can make you look the phone like you want to while gaming. As stated this can be enabled while gaming through gaming boost mode or it can also act as one of the coolest notifications light indicator, wherein the LED strip lights up while receiving calls, messages or playing music as well.
Air Convection Cooling System
The gaming phone’s primary feature is to perform well and to handle the heat while playing your favorite resource intensive titles. Nevertheless, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC handles the performance part, the new cooling system, which the company calls it the Air Convention Cooling System helps you to have smoother gameplay. While it’s most uncertain to put up clunky fans in the smartphone, Nubia had a different approach by introducing three special technologies into the Red magic phone to keep the temperatures down. The air cooling system utilizes heat-absorbent materials alongside three layers of graphite that controls the heat dissipated through the processor during the intensive gaming sessions.
Adding to the advanced cooling system, the diamond-cut design on the rear of the Red Magic phone also helps to cool down the heat effectively. The diamond cut design not only looks pretty cool on the back but it makes the phone lighter to hold, which is a predominant feature for any gaming smartphone. The diamond cut design is not just for aesthetics but also handle smoother play, for instance, the four cooling ports on the back of the device allows Red Magic phone for better hot-cool air exchange. Bear in mind, the three outlets act as air vents, and the other vent acts as the phone’s speaker.
Performance and Battery
As stated the Red Magic phone packs in last year’s Snapdragon 835 processor, albeit being the older processor, the company had chosen this processor to deliver stable performance without any lags. Henceforth, the company claims that it had also tweaked the 835 chipset to provide high performance for specific gaming scenarios. The chipset paired with Adreno 530 GPU along with 8GB of RAM and dual-lane 128GB UFS 2.1 storage, makes the gaming phone to deliver an overall smoother gaming experience.
The Red Magic gaming smartphone is kept alive by a 3800mAh battery that supports fast charging (5V/2A). Well, this battery is undoubtedly sufficient to carry out the regular mundane tasks through the day. Since this is a game-centric smartphone, it needs to handle the higher temperatures while gaming alongside powering the LED strip on the back as well. Therefore, continuous gaming makes it hard to last the battery through a day, and nevertheless, the quick charging capabilities is an added convenience for the gamers. The Red Magic runs on stock Android 8.1.0 without any bloatware or what so ever, which makes the phone feel fast while handling regular day-to-day tasks.
