LG files Patent for UltraWide Mobile+ for 21:9 Aspect Ratio Smartphone Display

It is quite evident that LG is struggling a little with the smartphone market, with its current smartphone lineup. The company’s flagship for the year 2016, the LG G5 didn’t produce expected results for the company. The device particularly was good, but a bit underdeveloped in a way. It felt as if the company desperately wanted to bring a change in the market and hence they came up with the so-called modularity function. Well, you can check out our full written review for the LG G5 here for more details on that. Moving on from that, now it looks like the company might have some interesting plans for its future smartphone lineup.

According to sources, the company filed a patent application last week for a new technology named ‘Ultrawide Mobile+’. According to this patent, this new technology will deliver 21:9 aspect ratio in smartphone displays. This is much wider screen than the ones we are using currently. 21:9 aspect ratio is typically used in theatres, and it hasn’t been implemented on either a smartphone or a tablet before. If implemented properly, this could be a great display and will allow a great content consumption experience as a whole, allowing countless other opportunities.

This could very well be the company’s weapon for the upcoming year, where it would aim to get the market share in the smartphone market. It is also noted that the company was granted the patent for a wraparound display, which will essentially allow the display to extend on both the sides of the device. So it is expected that the company might implement this display with 21:9 aspect ratio on such a display. But we have to wait and see what the company comes up with here.

LG is also planning to launch its upcoming smartphone called the LG V20. The V20 is the successor to previously launched LG V10 last year. This device is expected to launch at IFA 2016. It is definitely going to be a worthy upgrade to the existing V10, so we have to wait and see how this device will stand against the competition. Stay tuned for more info on this.
