Huawei Ascend P8

The Ascend P8 from Huawei is officially announced at a global event held by the company in London. The latest flagship isn’t the only device announced, as its Max version with a larger screen is also made official alongside it. The Ascend P8 comes with a 5.2-inch 1080p display (we have the Moto X 2014 in mind with the same size and resolution), and there is some good internal power packed into it.

Under the hood, the Ascend P8 is powered by company’s homegrown Kirin 930 processor (an octa-core processor with 64-bit architecture), along with 3GB of RAM. There’s 32GB of internal storage, and that is expandable to 128GB with a MicroSD card slot included. A glass covering on the back protects the 13-megapixel rear camera (Sony sensor) with OIS and Dual-LED flash. On the front, there is a 8-megapixel selfie shooter.

On the software side, we see a EMUI 3.1 software over Android 5.0 Lollipop, and it isn’t much different from the recent top-end smartphones from Huawei. There are advancements even in the camera application, where there is a new super low-light mode included, as well as a Photosphere-like 360-degree panorama mode. Optical Image Stabilizer technology up to 1.2° is a part of the camera hardware.

Huawei claims that the 2680 mAh battery in the Ascend P8 will be good enough to give usage for over a day and a half, and that the battery is non-removable. This is a Dual SIM device, with the thickness of just 6.4mm, and it is 4G capable. Additionally, with an optional E-ink screen on the back of the phone, the metal back cover can switch to an eBook in just seconds.

“The goal of Huawei P8 is to become the most user-friendly smartphone for consumers globally” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.

The Huawei Ascend is available in two variants, the standard one is for €499 and the premium version for €599. It will initially be available in more than 30 countries including China, Columbia, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, UAE and the United Kingdom.

Now, what are Standard and Premium versions. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Standard version will have 3GB RAM, 16GB ROM, and the colors – Titanium Grey, Mystique Champagne.
  • Premium version will have 3GB RAM, 64GB ROM, and the colors – Carbon Black, Prestige Gold.
