Earlier – 22nd February 2016: Right when it was thought that Windows Phones are dead, another big name in industry revealed a Windows Phone. HP, a top-tier American multinational brand has launched its Windows Phone, Elite X3 at the MWC 2016 event happing in Barcelona. The company which doesn’t really have a good portfolio in a smartphone is considering to win hearts with their latest device. Though, the X3 isn’t just a smartphone, running on the Windows 10 it’s designed to be your only and only handset – smartphone, laptop, and a Desktop PC.
The brand has launched Elite X3 as a phablet sporting a 6-inch Quad HD resolution display. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 820 processor, which is Qualcomm’s most powerful processor yet. The device would be having a whooping 4GB of RAM, extremely heavy 64GB internal storage with support of expanding up to 2TB via a microSD card. You can find an iris scanner on the front and a fingerprint scanner on the back side. It is powered by a large 4150 mAh capacity battery. This is as much powerful a Windows phone can get and even more certainly powerful than the top of the line Lumia 950 XL by Microsoft.
For this device to succeed, the company wants people to use it more than just a smartphone. The Elite X3 is designed around Continuum, which is a feature that lets Windows smartphone users use it as a full Windows computer with mouse and keyboard. It is pursued as a potentially killer feature of a Windows smartphone over iPhone or any other high-end Android smartphone. Well, if only HP and Microsoft could sell this dream.
Now as for the targeted consumers, the brand is focusing to go after business crowd, as they are more likely to use a smartphone as laptop or a Desktop PC. Though there’s a hurdle here, Windows 10 won’t be able to run full desktop apps, and that defies the targeted business class audience. Because they would want to use those apps, but HP has found a way to do so, but it would need an IT expert to set it up, not for casual usage. It would be running those apps from the cloud software.
We are not sure if HP is there yet when it would see great growth in its Window Phone, but the Elite X3 is as far as high specced a Windows Phone have gone, not to mention beating 950 XL. Though, it might have lacked in photography front with a 15-megapixel image sensor on the rear side and an 8-megapixel sensor on the front side. The device also comes with an IP67 rating, which makes it water resistant and dustproof as well. It would be supporting wireless charging via Qi or PMA standard.
The Elite X3 would be shipping with two accessories; Desk Dock and Mobile Extender. The display dock will come with DisplayPort, two USB Type-A, one Type-C and RJ-45 Ethernet port, which will allow the phone to serve a desktop, thereby utilizing the Windows 10 Continuum feature. While the Mobile Extender, on the other hand, would function as a laptop when connected to X3, it houses a separate battery, a 12-inch 1080p display, and a keyboard.
