While many devices from brands like Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG recently got updated for the Android Marshmallow, there are some devices that are being updated to Android Lollipop from Android KitKat OS. Gionee’s Elife S5.1 is one such handset; the Chinese manufacturing giant has finally released an update to their almost two year’s old device. It might be quite late, but this tells us that the company is still focussed on its users. Note that the update is being rolled out to the Indian users.
Once the crown holder of world’s slimmest smartphone, the Elife S5.1 has been forgotten into a mist by critics but not by its maker. We know you have been struggling to get Android Lollipop functionalities by flashing different kinds of ROM, well, now you don’t have too. It’s better late than never, right! Since there are many handsets those who didn’t also see the day of light when it comes to Lollipop love. To jog up your memory, the company’s flagship device Elife E7 didn’t receive its promised Android L update.
Currently, there are no official statements released by the Gionee officials informing about this update. But we have been the user of this handset for quite a while now, and just moments ago got this update. If you’re interested in, we can make a demo showcasing what are the improvements and fixes done on this update. Since this is a major upgrade; the big size of 850.18MB was expected of it. We recommend you to do this update over your Wi-Fi network instead of mobile data, since, your data pack will get a big hit if you download it over mobile data.

Since the update was not announced by the company officials yet, we think it may be gradual, to check the users feedback first and then forward it to other users. If you got the notification, comment your feedback about the device with some screenshots. And if you haven’t got the notification of this major update yet, but can’t wait much, then there is a way for you to check. Just follow these instructions; Settings>About>Software menu, scroll through the list of options and try to find a manual update option there. Hopefully, you’ll see a new window popup notifying you of the latest release.
Important Note: Do not Install this update at this moment, because we have some serious issues on our unit. After the update most of the crucial applications like Phone Dialer, Process com.android.phone has stopped and they keep showing the error messages continuously. This is something we did not expect from Gionee in the major update & we are awaiting a follow up from the brand that would fix this. At this point, we are unable to use the Phone because of the said issues.
