by Karthik Iyer 3

2016 was particularly a great year for smartphones as we saw a bunch of new releases. From high-end premium smartphones to mid-ranged affordable offerings, we saw everything in 2016 and overall it was a win for the consumers. While the premium devices were priced upwards of 35,000 or 40,000 INR in most cases, the mid-ranged devices were strategically priced below 10,000 INR in most cases. However, one phenomenon which we witnessed towards the end of the year was that most of the high-end devices saw a significant price drop. In this report, we share the prices of these phones at which they are selling online and at the price you can buy these phones.

While consumers are storming the internet searching for the devices that saw a significant price drop, we decided to save you some work and do all the research. Talking about the price drop, few of the premium high-end smartphone saw a significant price drop. We are talking about a huge drop here, somewhere ranging about 10,000 INR to 12,000 INR. Below are the top 5 smartphones from 2016 that saw a significant price drop towards the end of the year. If you are in the market for a premium high-end device, then we suggest you consider these devices.

Note – We have gathered the pricing info of these smartphones from multiple sources and the report is based entirely on those pricing.

Samsung Galaxy S7/ S7 Edge

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and the S7 Edge are two of the best smartphones that were released last year. Although in terms of design, we didn’t see any significant difference from the previous year’s S6 and the S6 Edge, the S7 and the S7 Edge were great devices nonetheless. The Galaxy S7 packed the best internal at the time of the launch and hence the pricing was also on the higher side when compared to other offerings in the market.
At the time of the launch, the Samsung Galaxy S7 was priced at around 49,000 INR
At the time of the launch, the Samsung Galaxy S7 was priced at around 49,000 INR which is definitely on the pricier side for most consumers. However, the smartphone’s price dropped by around 2,000 to 3,000 INR in just two months and was retailing for about 46,000 INR on both online as well as offline markets. Soon after that, the prices dropped significantly around the month of September and the device was retailing for as low as 39,000 INR which about 10,000 INR less than the launch price, just within a year of the launch. The price has now been fluctuating around the same 38,000 INR mark and now it is retailing for about 38,000 to 39,000 INR in both online as well as offline markets.
The Galaxy S7 Edge is now available for as low as 38,000 INR
The S7 Edge also has some similar story to tell. In fact, it was priced a lot higher than the regular variant and the ironically, you can get it for a comparatively cheaper price than the S7 from some sellers online. The company dropped the smartphone at a price of around 56,000 INR and after going through a couple of price drops, it is now available for as low as 38,000 INR, which is a steal.

HTC 10

The next one on the list is none other than the HTC 10. The company launched the HTC 10 globally for a hefty price tag and well, let’s just say that it didn’t really work out in their favor. The smartphone was definitely a great performer and it had that typical HTC touch to it with an all metal design and chamfered edges. However, when you have smartphones selling for as low as 30,000 INR offering similar specs, convincing people to drop so much money of HTC 10 was next to impossible of a task.
we saw the price of the HTC 10 drop faster than any other device this year
Due to this, we saw the price of the HTC 10 drop faster than any other device this year. We are talking about a price drop almost every single month since its availability. As of March 2017, the smartphone is retailing for about 37,000 INR online. Well, 37,000 INR is still not very cheap, but hey, they might as well stop selling them rather lowering the price further. And yes, they were initially selling it for about 53,000 INR which is absolutely insane pricing.

Huawei P9
Huawei P9’s price has dropped over 15,000 INR since the launch
The Chinese smartphone manufacturing company, Huawei launched the camera-centric Huawei P9 smartphone last year in the month of August. This is indeed one of the best smartphones we saw last year if you talk about smartphones with great cameras. The company certainly had high hopes for this one and yes, it was priced at the higher side, falling on the premium range of smartphone. At the time of the launch, it was priced at 39,999 INR which in a way is a decent asking price for the device. But considering the fact that other smartphones in the market with pretty much the same performance capability was priced less, this was a bummer for most people.

The dual rear camera setup by Leica is, however, a great add on to this device though. It was unlike anything we saw from any other manufacturer and was certainly a great implementation. But unfortunately, most people still preferred to go with other offerings. And then the obvious happened and the price was later dropped drastically or rather say it had started to drop drastically since then. To our surprise, the last time we checked, the Huawei P9 is now available to purchase for as low as 24,000 INR, which is a huge cut-down.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium
Sony has always kept the pricing of their smartphones quite high in India
Sony has always kept the pricing of their smartphones quite high in India. And this is not something that we are seeing as a recent trend but this is something that they have been doing since the beginning. The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is no different. No doubt that they always come up with high-end specs for their smartphones, the pricing is also on the higher side. The Z5 Premium, when it was launched back in 2016 the price which we saw was about 54,000 INR. Not only was this very expensive, the smartphone by itself was not interesting.

And now after all these months, the Xperia Z5 Premium is available to purchase for a price of about 34,000 INR from both online as well as offline markets. Check out the graph shown above for all the latest pricing info and price drops. Also, in order to sum it up, we have shown the total percentage drop in the graph below for a better understanding.

Although these smartphones may not be the latest devices on the market right now, but for this particular price, they are a must buy and if you are in the market for an affordable offering in the market, these are totally the ones to be considered. This, on the other hand, is not the case with all the smartphones out there. There are a lot of smartphones out there in the market that have been consistent with the pricing. For instance, we barely see a price drop for iPhones and even OnePlus can be added to the list of manufacturers who have been quite consistent with the pricing.

Having said that, we would love to know your thoughts on this short report we came up with. Let us know what do you think is the reason behind these price drops? Be sure to let us know by dropping a comment down below and also stay tuned to PhoneRadar for such info.
