Well, not anymore. Yes, air passengers in India may soon be able to use Wi-Fi facility while flying. So all you internet warriors out there, you may now very well stay connected and tweet out or browse your news feeds on Facebook. You can also use your smartphones, etc. to make calls as well. Use of Wi-Fi might still be a paid service as other International Airlines are offering, but still, it is a nice thing to have. When asked about the prospect of Wi-Fi on board, Civil Aviation Secretary, RN Choubey stated that there would be good news coming in about ten days.

So this firm statement pretty much gives it a breadth of fresh air. It is considered to be an offence to use your smartphones inside while flying. Regulations are so stiff as of now that none of the airlines including the national carrier Air India. In order to have Wi-Fi access, the local servers are to be used, and it is quite expensive to implement in terms of resources required. So that idea was ultimately dropped.

But now with this new statement from the Civil Aviation Secretary, it is pretty much confirmed that the decision has been taken and will soon be made official. Well as of now, we just have to sit tight and relax until we have a final confirmation on the same.
