10th June: Talking about how the battery life of smartphones is the major problem for smartphone users as per the company’s survey, Gionee’s president William Lu introduced a new smartphone in the M series, the Gionee M5. The phone with dual batteries was announced with a hefty 6020 mAh capacity.
There is something called as a smart power consumption management feature that will help extend the battery life even further, and that is with a dark theme. An extreme mode is claimed to give about 62 hours of standby, when the battery left in the device is 5%.
The smartphone has a 5.5-inch display, and it comes with two SIM slots, and 4G LTE connectivity.
The device is 8.5mm thick in the center, and about 4.75mm on the sides. The company promises about two days of heavy usage, and about four days of interrupted usage on a single charge. The Gionee M5 has the reverse charge feature, using which one can use the phone’s battery to charge the other devices around. Advantage of having a large capacity battery, and this particular feature was available on the Marathon M3 as well.
The pricing of the Gionee M5 is set at 2299 RMB (about Rs. 23600).
Gionee is one such brand that has smartphones with a particular purpose solved – entertainment in “E” series, slimness and beauty with “S” series, and the Marathon series having smartphones with humongous battery life. Though the latest teaser from the company doesn’t mention the word “Marathon”, the mention with M shows the device in the same series, and the Gionee M5 is supposedly going to be a killer phone with the battery capacity.
Update: Just like the Elife E8, the Gionee M5 is going to be announced on the same day, i.e. June 10th, as per the invite from the company in China, which says “ME”, indicating the series M and E.
Dual battery is what we will be seeing in the Gionee M5, and that seems to be the next best thing. Previously, it was the Marathon M3 from Gionee that had a huge 5000 mAh battery, and recently, Innos D6000 was launched with a 6000 mAh battery. These are big numbers we’re talking about, and there is no proper information on how well do these batteries perform in actual. Larger tablet devices with higher resolutions seem to have similar battery capacities.
Dual battery has an advantage in itself, as there is a second battery if one gets out of power. And usually with these dual-battery smartphones, there is a technology that charges the two batteries at the same time, thus saving time. Nothing else is known about the device so far, but the Dual battery is already interesting enough to keep us excited to find out more about it.
The Marathon M5 might enter the market later, after the flagship Gionee Elife E8 is made official next month, but it won’t be delayed so much and we expect to see this officially announced in the third quarter itself.
Update, May 25th: The certification site TENAA has the Gionee M5 listed, and according to it, the phone will have a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, and the 6000 mAH capacity for its battery is confirmed. Just like the other Gionee phones recently, the M5 will be running Android 5.0 out of the box, with Amigo 3.0 OS.
