Windows Phone 8.1 - Cortana Activation

Even if most people in tech community doesn’t like a Windows Phone that doesn’t mean, it is not actually is a good device. Different peoples are different priorities on what they prefer on their smartphones. If you are one of them and have purchased a Windows Phone or been using it for quite a time now. Then you must be aware of the Cortana, a personal assistant on the Windows Phone, which was first introduced on Windows Phone 8.1 and was initially available in selected regions like, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy and Spain. While we don’t know about other regions, there was a bit confusing on how to use the Cortana services in India.

We faced the issue with Lumia 535, though; that didn’t ship with the Denim Update 2, whereas the Lumia 640 XL is being shipped with update out of the box. So, we tried our hands-on with the device and were able to activate the Cortana services. We have layout some instructions below so that you could also able to activate Cortana service. But note that your Windows Phone should be running on at least OS version 8.10.14141.167 or later.

  1. Language: Go to Settings, change your first language to English (United Kingdom). Remember it should be placed number 1 in the list then only it will be activated.
  2. Region: Make sure that you have selected India as your region, as well as you would have to make sure that the regional format select in that is matching the phone language. Meaning, it should have English (UK) language selected.
  3. Speech: Now the third thing that you have to make sure is the speech language of the system. It should also be selected as English (UK). To do that you have to go to the Settings app and head over to the “input + accessibility” section, there you’ll find the speech option you’re looking for. Make sure it is set to the correct speech language.

Now after ensuring all three things mentioned above you can start the Cortana setup, as no more “not available in your region” would bother you. The initial setup requires a quite environment as it would need low noise to recognize the voice. You’ll have to be patient for the initial setup. Now that you’ve set it up successfully, enjoy!

But remember you can always turn OFF the Cortana services from the settings of the Cortana app itself. Just go to the app, and tap on menu options, and then further on Settings, there you’ll find several option like, set your name, then have Cortana address you by it, as well as some other interactive features that you might like or not.
